Speed Chess: Not for the Faint of Heart

When some people think of chess, they think of a deliberately paced, methodical game of strategy – a battle of wits that can stretch on practically to eternity. It’s also commonly thought of as a refined game of unmatched elegance, played on a marble chess board. A chess player might enjoy sipping on a fine red wine while systematically dismantling his opponent. Well, you can throw all these impressions out the window if you’re talking about speed chess.
In a speed chess tournament, players are given considerably less time to make their moves, and they must start and stop the clock by slapping a button with their hands. Strategy still reigns supreme in fast chess, although players must use their killer instinct much earlier in the game. Moves that would normally play out elliptically are brought to the surface almost immediately, and most players go on the offensive right from the start.
