The Ancestry of Chess

Who invented Chess and where did it come from? Nobody really knows. There are several theories though.

One theory is that chess evolved from the ancient Chinese game of Xiangqi. Another theory states that it evolved from an old game Chaturanga from India or Afghanistan. Yet others say it evolved out of Persia. Many other cultures also claim it’s origin. Regardless of where it evolved from, the game of Chess as we know it today has spread in popularity all over the world.

As the game of chess evolved, so did it’s many variations of materials. Countries hand crafted chess sets from their finest local materials. One can find chess sets made from numerous fine woods, stone, marble, glass, tile, alabaster, brass and other precious metals. Themed chess sets also evolved over time including Civil War chessmen, World civilization Chessmen, Animal Chessmen and fantasy chessmen. With unlimited themes and numerous materials, one can customize a chess set to one’s personal taste and enjoyment.
