The Very Basics of Chess

The game of chess is a two player strategic game played on a chess board which is a square board of eight rows and eight columns. The name that is assigned to the colors of the 64 squares is referred to as light squares and dark squares, which alternate. The board is placed between the two opponents so that each one has a black square in the lower left corner.
Each of the pieces is divided into white and black sets. Each player begins the game with sixteen pieces of the specified color. These consist of one king, one queen, two rooks, two bishops, two knights and eight pawns. Each type of piece has specific allowable moves. The game begins with the pieces set up as follows:
